My Doctor Told Me I Would Never Lose Weight Postpartum: Here is How I Proved Her Wrong

I still remember the feeling I had going into my doctor appointment. I had already completed my 6 week postpartum checkup with my OBGYN (a highly underwhelming experience) and was months away from having gave birth to my daughter. I sat in my primary care providers office, desperately searching for answers. Despite having been cleared by my OB to engage in regular physical activity, meeting with a nutritionist, and starting an intense postpartum workout routine, I was still struggling with postpartum weight loss. My inability to lose weight had affected my confidence, and I struggled to appreciate and accept this new version of myself.

I passionately explained to my physician all that I was going through and begged her for advice. As a first-time mom who has otherwise never struggled with being overweight, I was deeply troubled by my weight gain and could not understand why I was having such a hard time losing fat. I was genuinely shocked at her response.

My physician told me it was incredibility difficult to lose postpartum baby weight. Moreover, she said for some women, losing the weight is nearly impossible. Your body and hormones changes so much during pregnancy and delivery, and sometimes you just need to accept those changes as aesthetically permanent and move on.

Here is the thing, I am not one to give up on a goal. I studied ballet for years before becoming a mother. I knew I had the physical and mental ability to stay in shape. So, I made it my mission within the next year to lose weight despite my doctors coldly communicated advice.

That’s why I spent the next year and a half of my life learning all there is to know about hormone balancing, thyroid disorders, somatic movement, stress relief techniques, meditation, and mindfulness. It wasn’t a linear path, and anyone who knows me personally is aware of the dedication, time, and effort it took to get to the point I am at today.

Through the good and the bad, I learned SO MUCH about myself and my body on that healing journey. While I did end up losing the baby weight and am now happily back to my pre-pregnancy weight, the impact this experience had on me is goes far beyond weight loss.

The transformation I encountered while engaging in weight loss via mindfulness and somatic movement is IMMEASURABLE. I feel confident, happy, and secure in myself and my body again. I am able to focus on parenting and building the life of my dreams.

So what’s the key takeaway? What was the ultimate variable that led to me losing the postpartum baby weight? Ill tell you. It wasn’t high intensity workouts. It wasn’t long distance runs. It wasn’t large calorie deficits.

It was learning to control my mindset through strategic movement and mindfulness.

Yup, that’s right. This isn’t some low-calorie intense workout plan or weird supplement pitch. I literally just changed my mindset. I reframed my brain to think more positively, and I regulated my nervous system to handle stressful situations in a more neutral way.
